French troops near Nancy dislodge enemy positions and force a retreat as Allied reports claim gains in Belgium. The advance underscores continued pressure on German forces along the front with Belgian operations adding to the widening arena of engagement.
"Bessie" the cocker spaniel of Mrs Lucia FE Liscomb a wealthy Brookline widow was accorded funeral honors. In a limousine with drawn shades her body was taken to a temporary grave in Braintree where she was buried in a casket lined with carnations and rhododendrons.
From Monday morning until burial, Bessie lay in Mrs. Liscomb’s Harvard Street apartment in a wicker coffin with silk and ribbons. A private grave on Mrs. Jennie G. Paine’s estate received the body with rhododendrons and pink carnations. Funeral director William helped prepare the scene as Ms Liscomb recalled the tenderness of the deed.
A fire at 1 20 this morning badly damaged the $100,000 collection of American paintings on display at the Vose Gallery located at 396 Boylston Street.

John N. Jenkins 17 and Annie M. Hayes 19 both of South Boston eloped to Portland Maine a week ago seeking marriage. They returned last evening under the gaze of James N. Jenkins the groom’s father who had awaited them in the city clerk’s office thwarting the plan for a marriage license.
Nine months into a romance begun in a candy factory Jenkins and Miss Hayes planned to wed in Portland. The girl's mother says the elder Jenkins opposed the elopement and learned of their license plans, then timed his Portland visit to block the ceremony. The couple returned home discouraged but Mrs Hayes remains hopeful the marriage will occur.
Eben W. Pike, after 25 years as assistant clerk of committees, was retired on an $800 pension at a Cambridge city government meeting. The retirement had been reviewed by the finance committee for over a year.
