Mrs. Elizabeth M. Huggard of Waltham sues the Waltham Training School for Nurses for 20090 alleging a nurse gave carbolic acid by mistake during typhoid care. Her husband seeks 5000. Physicians cite septicemia. school officials defend the nurse and expect no trial.
Mrs William Golden aged 34 and her infant daughter Jennie age 2 were fatally burned when a lamp exploded after a tablecloth pulled by the baby caused a lamp upset. Mrs Golden and Jennie were taken to Lowell Hospital where Jennie died at 9 o clock and Mrs Golden at 9 50. Mrs Golden was formerly Miss Ella Stone.
Biagil Coggiano aged 13 of 222 Hanover street was stabbed in the back with a large pocket knife during a quarrel over 5 cents at a wharf yesterday afternoon. He was taken to Relief station and is expected to recover. Eremeldo Caprio, 16 of Webster avenue, is held at Station 1 on an assault and battery charge. The bootblacks argued over money. Caprio fled but was later captured by police.
Edward E Penley formerly of Medford shot himself through the forehead in Lewiston yesterday afternoon. A traveling salesman for a wholesale beer firm in Medford, he later moved to Auburn to start a produce business with his brother. Despondency followed business reverses. He leaves a wife and two children, Lester 21 and Alice 17.
James Newman of 1841-2 Sumner Street East Boston fell from a second story window at his home yesterday morning. He was found unconscious in the rear yard around 7 am and taken to the Relief station. He sustained fractures of the thigh wrist and several ribs along with other minor injuries. No cause of the fall is known.
About 1000 students at Michigan Agricultural College went on strike after 17 peers were suspended for taking part in a rush. No classes were held this afternoon as the faculty insisted on maintaining the suspensions despite student resolutions urging reinstatement.
Forecast notes showers Tuesday for Boston and vicinity followed by fair and cooler conditions on Wednesday. Expect variable winds with the changing conditions across the two days.

On Oct 27 Dr. Morse of the State Board of Health reported 15 smallpox cases, nine in Webster and six in Dudley, after partial examination. He expects to stay two or three days, with pest houses set up in both towns. Two patients, one in each town, are not expected to live.
Emanuel Johnson, a laborer at Philadelphia's new city filtration plant, was arrested on suspicion of murdering John DabINaugh in Clinton Massachusetts during the Wachusett reservoir excavation on September 18 1897. He awaits Massachusetts authorities action as seven murder suspects have been seized at the filtration plant this year.
In Colon on October 27 the Colombian cruiser Bogota arrived at Panama amid expectations of a sharp naval clash off the isthmus. American gunners ride on both fleets while the Bogota’s career draws government focus. Rear Admiral Casey visited Colon today.
Patrick Rich, 22, of 15 Charter Street, became the latest victim of caisson disease. While at work he suffered severe leg pains and fainted. He was taken to the Relief station where his condition was serious but not dangerous.
In Vienna on the forenoon of Oct 27 the emperor’s carriage horses ran wild near Schoenbrunn. Francis Joseph jumped from the vehicle and walked to the Hofburg unharmed. No one was hurt.
London Oct 27 The Boer commanders Kritzinger Fouche and Joubert narrowly escaped an angry crowd after addressing a Cambridge meeting. Kritzinger scaled a wall to flee while the others were escorted to their hotel by police.
An official of the Metropolitan Coal Company of Boston says no information supports reports of $6.60 coal price and that imports from Philadelphia and New York are not expected for at least 10 days and perhaps three weeks. Retail dealers' profits have fallen 7% to 80% from normal levels as sales shrink.
Julia Marlowe has canceled engagements for two weeks due to illness. She fell ill in Providence, Rhode Island, on Sunday and was brought to New York City where she remains under a physician’s care.
A four year old boy, Jayon Locke of 46 Upton Street, was found unconscious at about 9 30 yesterday morning due to coal gas poisoning. A doctor reported the condition dangerous and he was taken to City Hospital for treatment.
Senator Lodge Attorney General Parker and Rufus B Dodge of Worcester spoke to Republicans in Spencer Town Hall. J R Kane presided. Lodge called the tombstones on the Democratic cemetery and Dodge outlined his stance on issues favoring tariff revision.
George A. West, a decorator residing at 2 Tucker Street in Dorchester, was assaulted yesterday by an unknown man. He reports no provocation, suffering a broken nose, a severe scalp wound, and facial bruising including eye discoloration.
A Gaston Club meeting at 19 Lewis Street tonight aims to back John A. Keliher for Congress and William A. Gaston. Speeches will be delivered by club president Willam J. Murphy and Thomas Nealon.
In Chicago a riot broke out at Morgan and West Monroe streets as the American Posting Service tried to post bills with non union labor. Seven men were injured, Morgan streetcar service halted, and over 800 people gathered. Police arrived as non union workers surrendered and fled. Two bills were posted then torn down by rioters. A temporary injunction barred the Bill Posters and Billers Union from picketing in the vicinity or interfering with workers.
Former President Cleveland expresses interest in the party this year but declines active involvement. He reluctantly consented to a Morristown speech, but rejects further appearances, citing retirement. He notes the tariff revision is the paramount issue in American politics and that Democrats stand on solid ground.
Westfield, Oct 27. Mrs Louis M Dewey 32 wife of genealogist Louis M Dewey who authored the Dewey family history, died within ten minutes after taking carbolic acid. A native of Broad Brook Conn she left a son aged ten. Despondency is believed to be the cause.
The annual reception of the Central Club of Somerville was held last night at the Highland avenue clubhouse. About 20 members and their ladies attended with music, a collation and dancing. Guests included Admiral John M. Merry, U. S. N. (retired), and Mrs. Merry.
Washington Oct 27 The anthracite coal strike commission opened with full operator and miner representation. It will begin field work next Thursday at 9 am, starting with mine and miner home inspections around Scranton, covering the entire anthracite region. Miners demand wage increases and shorter hours. operators push for sliding scale and profit sharing. The panel plans expert accounting review and separate company data, with inspections to include mines and homes.
