General Oliver O Howard, last Union commander in the Civil War, died at his Burlington home from heart disease. Born November 8 1830 in Leeds Missouri he graduated Bowdoin then West Point 1854 and served in Indian wars and Civil War battles from Bull Run to Antietam. He commanded Maine volunteers and later Sedgwick’s division before becoming a major general of volunteers. Continued on Page 2 Fourth Column.
