In Lynn Massachusetts October 25 Mayor Ramsdell opened his congressional campaign with a crowded Odd Fellows Hall. Senator Roberts spoke yesterday in the same venue. Eugene J McCarthy endorsed Ramsdell and attacked protectionism. Ramsdell asserted shifts in trade policy and chastised opponents over the Dingley bill. He pledged to oppose hides duties and attacked imperialism. He argued for silver coinage and a double standard.
London reports Cecil Rhodes said four years ago he warned Baron De Courcel that Britain would fight to prevent France from reaching the Nile and severing the north south link. Press reaction favors Salisbury’s stance and hints at naval arms expansion as tensions rise over Fashoda and potential war. Meanwhile a Boston police inquiry probes a severe assault on Edward Gallagher after a Madison Park incident, with Gallagher in critical condition from brain concussion and possible internal injuries.

Cedar Rapids Indiana faced a day of isolation as a fierce snowstorm hit. Officials estimated about a foot of snow blanketed the area while temperatures plummeted signaling a rapid drop in weather conditions.
Mattie Pennell, 30, of 110 P Street, South Boston, was rushed to City Hospital unconscious after ingesting carbolic acid she believed to be cough medicine. Doctors say she cannot live until daylight as police investigate the mishap and the bottle’s contents.

Boston police were ordered to search for William Lock a 58 year old English fugitive from Barnstable England accused of embezzling a large sum. A Scotland Yard cable said Lock sailed to Boston on a recent steamer and is believed to remain there. He is 5 feet 7 inches tall with fresh complexion gray hair and mustache. A reward of 250 dollars is offered.
