Death of John B. Martin Irish born copper plate engraver and noted portrait painter

The city mourns the death Wednesday night of John B. Martin an Irish native who arrived here young. A copper plate engraver by trade he pursued painting and rose to eminence as a portrait artist. His Chief Justice Marshall portrait stands as a masterwork and his character is praised as upright generous and devout. He educated a large family and lived with persistent virtue and industry.
