Captains William Low and Atwood were killed and Lieutenant Morrison wounded in the engagement opposite Santo Domingo City. The American commander tried to arrest General Batista, who resisted and ordered an attack. Rebels were defeated after considerable fighting and panic hit the capital. Reinforcements were sent to maintain order. exact numbers killed and wounded are not yet known.

Fishing Crews Out On Strike In Gloucester

In Gloucester on October 24 a strike erupted after disputes between 16 captains and their Portuguese crews. About 800 fishermen are involved and nine sailors were arrested on assault and battery charges. Captain Alviro Quadros of the Georgina says he was attacked Saturday night by crew members. a Gloucester District Court hearing is set for tomorrow.

Oct 24. City Council members go on trial before Judge Joseph F. Quinn of Salem on charges of failing to quell the April disorder at Haverhill City Hall after Thomas E. Leyden sought to deliver an anti Catholic lecture. Judge Quinn barred questions on prejudice toward Catholics, ruling the incident involved an unlawful assembly on a public street, not religious conflict.

Boston City Council Split On One Day Off For Firemen

The Boston City Council committee on ordinances divided on granting one day off in three to Boston firemen with Attridge Ballantyne and McDonald in favor and Coleman Collins Hagan and Storrow against. Mrs Hannah Brophy aged 50 was struck and killed by a car crossing Centre street Jamaica Plain last night. Driver Levy J Greenwood 26 of Walpole brought her to Faulkner Hospital then was arrested on manslaughter charges. Brophy worked as a laundress at Adams Nervine Asylum en route to work.

French Break German Line Near Verdun In New Offensive

Paris dispatch reports that on October 24 French forces shifted from the Somme to Verdun area and smashed the German line along a four and one third mile front north and northeast of Verdun. They penetrated the line along its entire length and advanced about two miles in the center after a heavy bombardment. The attack was launched from near Bras on the eastern Meuse bank toward Damloup Battery.
