Washington reports the Mexican situation grows serious as officials acknowledge fears Carranza’s term may be ending and a new regime could emerge, with indications of resignation near in Mexico City as his wife already remains there.
U S soldiers killed in clash with rebel forces in Santo Domingo on October 24. General Ramon Batista was killed. Several Americans reported dead including two officers, one American officer wounded.
Captains William Low and Atwood were killed and Lieutenant Morrison wounded in the engagement opposite Santo Domingo City. The American commander tried to arrest General Batista, who resisted and ordered an attack. Rebels were defeated after considerable fighting and panic hit the capital. Reinforcements were sent to maintain order. exact numbers killed and wounded are not yet known.
In Gloucester on October 24 a strike erupted after disputes between 16 captains and their Portuguese crews. About 800 fishermen are involved and nine sailors were arrested on assault and battery charges. Captain Alviro Quadros of the Georgina says he was attacked Saturday night by crew members. a Gloucester District Court hearing is set for tomorrow.
Oct 24. City Council members go on trial before Judge Joseph F. Quinn of Salem on charges of failing to quell the April disorder at Haverhill City Hall after Thomas E. Leyden sought to deliver an anti Catholic lecture. Judge Quinn barred questions on prejudice toward Catholics, ruling the incident involved an unlawful assembly on a public street, not religious conflict.
The case opened with Mayor Albert L Bartlett Alderman Roswell le Wood Charles M Hoyt Christopher G Cook and Albert E Stickney seated with their lawyers John J Winn and W Scott Peters Tom Wood and Essex S Abbott represented defendants. District Attorney Louis 8 Cox led the prosecution aided by Fred F Flynn Arthur Wells and W H McSweeney outlining the government's rioting charge connected to Leyden's lecture attempt and subsequent council actions.
The Boston City Council committee on ordinances divided on granting one day off in three to Boston firemen with Attridge Ballantyne and McDonald in favor and Coleman Collins Hagan and Storrow against. New member Geoffrey B Lehy abstained. A letter from Councillor Kenny expressed opposition. Final action set for next Tuesday. The council also gave first reading to a measure authorizing the mayor to sell Gallups Island to the U S government for 150000 and drew 352 jurors.
The International Trust Company notes the 1915 consolidation with Lincoln Trust, reporting deposits of over nineteen million dollars and a two million dollar savings deposit base. Leadership commits to service, non discrimination, and expanded domestic and foreign exchange, aiming to reach twenty million dollars by January 1, 1917, with public cooperation urged. The Boston institution, led by Charles G. Bancroft, operates from 45 Milk Street and 114 Summer Street.
Purchasing agent for the city resigned yesterday amid a dispute with Mayor Curley, assigning blame to the mayor and citing disagreements over city procurement policies and oversight.
D. Frank Doherty resigned as city purchasing agent after a clash with Mayor Curley over awarding orders. Doherty told a Post reporter that the Mayor gave him an hour to resign or be discharged, and the two men differed on whether the resignation was under pressure.
Acting agent Doherty says resignation voluntary while Mayor Curley disputes. Doherty completes handover to Patrick O Hearn, appointed by the Mayor as acting purchasing agent, as his brief note to the city ends with a terse reproof of Curley.
Washington reports Mrs William F Draper hosted a pre nuptial dinner for Miss Margaret Preston Draper niece of a former Massachusetts governor and Prince Andrea Boncompagni of Rome. They will marry tomorrow at the Draper home.
Mrs Hannah Brophy aged 50 was struck and killed by a car crossing Centre street Jamaica Plain last night. Driver Levy J Greenwood 26 of Walpole brought her to Faulkner Hospital then was arrested on manslaughter charges. Brophy worked as a laundress at Adams Nervine Asylum en route to work.
Long Branch N J October 24 Henry Ford, after a conference with President Wilson, announced that he has established equal pay for women and men in his plants as a result of an inspiring talk. Most women will receive at least five dollars a day.
French forces shattered the Crown Prince line north of Verdun and captured Douaumont along with surrounding positions. More than 3500 German prisoners were brought in.
Francis Ducharme is held by Chicopee police on charges of murdering 8 year old Leona YWaczar who died in Springfield last Sunday.
Chicopee police work to connect Francis Ducharme, confessed killer of 3 year old Leona Kaczar, with the year old homicide of Lillian Begley in Holyoke as investigators pursue possible ties and evidence.
Ducharme said to have murdered a girl but police insist circumstantial evidence will connect him. He pleaded not guilty and was held for the grand jury after a bail hearing. A thousand-strong crowd gathered outside the courthouse, police with clubs kept the mob in check as he was hurried to Springfield and jailed. The girl’s funeral proceeded at St Stanislaw's Church, with hundreds of children attending.
London reports that French forces at Verdun recaptured virtually all lost ground in a single day, contrasting with the two months the Germans spent to claw back the same area in the second Verdun battle as military experts analyze the gains.
Charles E. Hughes told a Brooklyn crowd at Scheutzen Park Hall that he seeks only support from those whose interests are subordinate to the United States and who will defend America against foreign aggression, reject immunity for foreign actions, and oppose any alien influence or control over national power.
Paris dispatch reports that on October 24 French forces shifted from the Somme to Verdun area and smashed the German line along a four and one third mile front north and northeast of Verdun. They penetrated the line along its entire length and advanced about two miles in the center after a heavy bombardment. The attack was launched from near Bras on the eastern Meuse bank toward Damloup Battery.
Nightfall finds Douaumont village and fort in French hands with left wing pushing beyond Thiaumont and seizing the Haudremont quarry along the Bras Douaumont road. Right wing advances extend toward Damloup. French forces report over 3600 prisoners and large quantities of war material captured.

He cites Wilson's forward movement for womankind and plans to publish supportive ads before the election. He arrived to boost the Wilson band wagon at Shadow Lawn.
