A trio of masked highwaymen robbed Bartlett's grocery on Sagamore Street Lynn at dusk. Witnesses described two in light coats and one in striped blue overalls while firearms intimidated seven employees for over four minutes. Police say Hart is suspected but lack direct evidence. no identifications or clear directions were obtained.
New York residents Thomas F. Ryan and James Thompson, sentenced in Worcester on February 10, 1896, to twelve years for a Webster post office burglary, claim innocence. Richard Burns of Worcester confessed before their trial, but their convictions stand. Governor Wolcott may receive a pardon petition as supporters testify they were elsewhere. Thompson, 62, works in the kitchen. Ryan, a laborer, is in the clothing department.
In Fall River on the Gifford farm David St George age 29 was fatally shot by his brother Clem ent 25 during a squirrel hunt. Amisfired double barrel gun discharged its load into David's abdomen and he died later that day. He leaves a wife and four children.
Stark Jobinsky hosted a Polish christening at 20 Front Street Chelsea. Frank Bargardsky fought with another Pole, causing a disturbance that drew Patrolman Webber. Bargardsky fled onto the Winnisimmet ferry drop, jumped in, and was rescued by ferry workers Alex McKinnon and Thomas Belyea. He was jailed for drunkenness.
An advertisement promises a one day cure for colds using Laxative Brome Quinine tablets. It claims a 25 cents price and offers a refund if the remedy fails to cure.
A Buffalo Express bound for New York was wrecked in the Hudson river. The list of dead includes 22 named individuals and many unidentified Chinamen with several injuries reported among survivors. Hospitalized victims include Tong Lee and Frank Degan with bruises and cuts. others from Peekskill and New York City are listed with varying injuries. Total known dead 22, estimated total dead 28.
A New York Central train from Buffalo derails into the Hudson River at Garrison killing twenty eight passengers. The engineer and fireman disappeared with the locomotive, while the express car followed into the water as the dawn lit the scene. The accident ends with questions about how such a disaster unfolded and who survived.
