Rhode Island Backwoods Murder Case Wide for Grand Jury

Providence Oct 23 There is another murder case to be investigated by the county grand jury. Harvey Pelkier a 19 year old white youth died at the hospital from a gunshot wound. Frank Williams a negro and his white wife are under arrest for the murder. The shooting occurred in a cottage in Limerock where Williams lived and Pelkier resided nearby. Williams was alleged jealous and a row led to the shooting.

Father pursues elopers in Keend New Hampshire

A young couple, Daniel Shea of Boston and Alice Hayden, obtained a marriage license in Keend and wed at a local minister. Hayden, father of the girl, claims she is 15 and pursued the couple to halt the match. Efforts to locate the elopers spread to towns north of Keend with no result.

Newton School Committee Discusses Building Needs and Expenditure

The Newton school committee met last evening and heard that the high school needs more accommodations. The wooden section is in improper sanitary shape and dangerous in fire. A brick addition has been necessary for years. Expenditures for the year reached 144,945 with 89.25 dollars per pupil, 1.95 for books and supplies, and 61.10 per pupil at the high school, an 87.10 percent increase. A debate over the Hamilton School master appointment ended with the motion defeated.

Boy arsonist in Athol faces state authorities

Georgie Cleveland, about 10, has terrorized neighbors by starting fires at Goddard and Manning's factory and a house on Wedgwood street. Sheriff R L Doane arrested him and he was brought before state authorities, who will report on the case.

Prize Fighting Law Upheld by Arkansas Supreme Court

The Arkansas Supreme Court quashed the Corbett habeas corpus and ruled Chancellor Leatherman overstepped, sending the case back to a justice of the peace. It also affirmed the 1891 prize fighting law as valid, making prize fighting a misdemeanor with a $1000 to $2500 fine. Corbett faces rearrest and a peace bond. Sixtieth anniversary shoot of Woburn Mechanic Phalanx

Runaway Accident In Malden Injures Reed And Hodgman

In Malden on Main street C D Reed and son in law W H Hodgman were thrown from a carriage when their horse balked at an electric car. Canton Postmaster Warren Cobb Dies at 74

Warren Cobb, the third oldest postmaster in the United States, died at his East Sharon home near Canton. Born and raised in the same house, he led a family post office tradition begun by his father Jonathan Cobb, the first postmaster, who served over twenty five years and died in 1845. Cobb was appointed by President Andrew Jackson and served continuously until his death at age 74 years, 2 months, and 24 days.
