A Boston merchant invites customers to beat rivals by offering generous deals on overcoats and under coats, promising warm, thick ranges and a full line of suits. The Essex and Washington streets shop touts excellent workmanship and invites shoppers to respond.
A twelve year old girl, daughter of Edgar J. Bliss, died yesterday in Salem from diphtheria after a two day illness. She was an attendant at the Bertram School.

At a meeting of security holders on Oct 23 a reorganization committee of Olcott Hoyt Poor Budge and King was appointed to reorganize the Missouri Kansas & Texas railroad. A plan approved forecloses mortgages forms a new company with initial board named by the committee. Holders of 7 percent bonds get new par bonds at 5 percent, one coupon paid in cash, one in a percent bond and the rest in preferred stock. 6 percent bonds receive 90 percent in new 6 percent bonds and preferred stock for arrears. stockholders receive common stock equal to their existing shares and preferred stock for assessments. Fixed charges under the plan total 2,074,000. preferred stock equals 10,000,000 with 5 percent priority.
A Boston and New York sea list shows ships arriving from Glasgow Antwerp Summerside Liverpool Vera Cruz Havana Kingston Jam New York Montreal Baltimore and more. Entries note port and date including Holland lines and ocean crossings with several vessels sailing in October.
London dispatch reports Mr. Gladstone addressing a crowded Southport meeting. He defended Liberal measures, slammed coercion, warned that dockers’ tenets would penalize tenants and tradesmen in Ireland, and urged ending the septennial act. Despatch also notes Stanley and Wissmann in Brussels.
In a Pester Lloyd interview Professor Vamberg reports the Sultan of Turkey will not join the triple alliance. He insists on neutrality and cordial relations with all powers. The Sultan welcomes Emperor William’s Constantinople visit and opposes Armenian autonomy due to the Muslim majority.
A cable despatch from Captain Wissmann reports reliable news of Emin Pasha and Henry M. Stanley Signor Casati and six Englishmen. They are expected to reach Mpwapwa in late November. Wissmann also states he defeated insurgents near Somwe and killed seventy of them.
A hundred or more members of the National Board of Promotion from trade and commercial circles gathered in Washington to back a Centennial celebration in 1892. Colonel Anderson argued for Washington as the fair city while George Gorman presented a memorial urging Congress to organize a national Columbus 400th anniversary celebration. Governor Fleming of Florida and others voiced support, and the memorial was adopted as the board’s sense.
At Wicura Kansas on October 23 crowds of railroad workers in Kingfisher Indian Territory faced United States troops as surveying crews push the Rock Island line toward Fort Reno. Workers attempted to extend access south of the border but were driven back at gunpoint. Kingfisher Board of Trade President William McGinnis, present with Rock Island attorneys, denounces the troop actions as uncalled for.
Governor Fowle opened the eleventh annual colored State fair in Raueiin North Carolina speaking to a large Negro audience. He said Negroes enjoy full state protection and rights equivalent to whites and pledged state support. He noted voluntary Exodus sentiment and praised the white community for past kindness. The fair secretary Rev Mr fuir endorsed the remarks amid applause.
A gathering of bar iron manufacturers from Philadelphia and vicinity concluded with a consensus that the trade is robust. Participants noted steady demand and quoted a base price of 19 1 2 cents per pound for carload lots in Philadelphia, with no anti competitive agreement formed.
