Body on ice floe linked to Lieut Putnam

San Francisco reports Lieut Powell and crew aboard the Leo from Point Barrow say they found evidence tying a body seen on an ice floe to Lieut Putnam after the Rodgers crew left North Star. Native accounts describe a burned Rodgers, and a swol len, very dark body recovered from an ice floe before being carried out to sea. The Corwin plans to reach the area by December.

Heroic Passenger Halts Runaway Train After Fire Burns Engineer

From New York October 25 a railway accident caused by machinery disarray sent steam and flames onto the locomotive. Engineer Leig was fatally burned and driven from the engine. Passenger Mr Steele rushed the air brake, stopping the train with 620 aboard. The fire was contained and the engineer died of his injuries.

Baltimore preacher Woodruff held on mail theft charge

Rev W L Woodruff who was arrested on a charge of opening a letter before delivery and obstructing correspondence appeared before US Commissioner Rogers in Baltimore and was held for grand jury action with bail set at 1000. The Newark contest between Geo. Gaisel of New York and ex champion Wm. Elliott of England covered three miles with a turn. Gaisel led from halfway, gained a clear lead, and won by several lengths. Funeral of Joseph W Aborn Passes Monday in Wakefield

The funeral for Joseph W. Aborn, longtime Boston and Maine railroad employee, was held Monday afternoon at his brother’s Wakefield residence. A large turnout attended as flowers including a cross of violets roses and wheat were sent by the Suffolk club. V D N Beach officiated with a Boston Highlands quartet providing music. Tragedy in New York as man kills wife and workers then dies

In Cooperstown on October 23 John N. Nape living near Portlandville shot his wife at the breakfast table injuring her in the neck. He then shot his hired man Baker in the neck, and after shooting himself three times he cut his throat outside, dying shortly after. The wife and Baker survived. Jealousy was given as the motive.

Desperadoes Johnson and Tex Hanged by Vigilantes

In Salt Lake City on October 23 two fugitives named Johnson and Tex, charged with murder and robbery of a Chinese man, were expelled by local residents near the Snake River. After being forced to leave the county they opened fire on locals and were subsequently hanged from a railroad bridge.
