A portion of Craigie’s bridge at Lower East Cambridge toppled into the Charles River around 3 p.m. yesterday, plunging more than 150 feet of structure with heavy timber and granite blocks. Ends were razed while the middle remained, prompting engineers to weigh river bed slipping against excess weight as causes.
After a Sunday collapse of the West Boston bridge, engineers seek certainty before dam foundations. Police from Cambridge Station 3 restored order as crowds feared catastrophe. John Laker, a Dorchester Institute of Technology student living on Adams Street, was rescued by Sheldon Boat Company workers from Neponset after a half hour of intense winds and heavy seas left his disabled yacht hanging by a spar.
Laker, worn out by frantic struggles, was saved after a near capsize near the Neponset River mouth. He had gone to Squantum to close a cottage and retrieve furnishings when a heavy sea tipped the boat and pitched him into the water. He clung to a spar but was too exhausted to reboard.
FALL RIVER Oct 21 Mrs Abijah J Wilcox 75 of Westport committed death by her own action today by taking gas while visiting friends in this city. She had been despondent since the death of her husband who killed himself in Westport woods about a year ago.
The Chelsea ferryboat City of Boston broke machinery on the 3 15 pm trip from the city to Chelsea. Passengers panicked as the vessel drifted toward the North ferry area. Captains Park McCarthy and Joseph Lawrence led a rescue by a naptha launch while tugs Peter W. French and Ariel secured a hawser and towed her to Chelsea. City of Malden replaced the disrupted service.
Albert Michie age 24 of Somerville is in serious condition at Malden Hospital after a motorcycle and a runabout driven by Julius Zinn of Boston collided at Central avenue and the Boulevard at 5 30 pm. Witnesses say Michie turned into Central as Zinn turned toward Somerville, Michie was hurled about 10 feet and found unconscious with head and body injuries. Zinn escaped injury.
