Large crowd clashes with police as service members mass to guard a public event. Reports indicate a tense standoff with officers firing shots amid efforts to protect the scene and maintain order.
In New York thousands of soldiers sailors marines and civilians clash with police to stop Die Meistersinger at the Lexington Theatre despite Mayor Hylan’s order banning German opera until a peace treaty is signed. Shots fired and bricks hurled as crowds attempt to breach security.
Judge Elbert H. Gary of United States Steel Corp reaffirmed at the national industrial conference that the steel strike should not be arbitrated or compromised and opposed conference action. He maintained the open shop and the right to set terms of employment between employee and employer, drawing a rebuke from Samuel Gompers, AFL president, who said Gary showed no other opinion in the matter.

Washington October 2 Count V di Cellere Italian ambassador to the United States since 1918 died at Emergency Hospital shortly before an operation. He had been ill since Saturday and died on the operating table at 9 40 pm of mesenteric thrombosis. He was 53.
Major-General Sir David Watson, a key Canadian World War figure, lands in Boston today. Officials including Governor Coolidge and Mayor Peters will greet the distinguished visitor.
