In Worcester on October 20, reports reveal a secret dark lantern organization within the Republican party. The group has gained control of the Republican city committee and is nominating candidates for office. The membership is large and strongly anti- this faction.
The event features a torchlight procession escorting Carl Schurz from Music Hall to Turn Hall on Wednesday night. A 1500-strong brigade of mugwump Republican supporters from multiple Massachusetts cities and colleges will participate, with Lieut. G Henry Taylor as marshal and Adjt. Crane of the Boston Unions failed to beat his own 135 yard record in St Louis on Sunday with a best 134 yards 5 inches despite a strong wind. Managers of the Lawrence Base Ball club have engaged Brosnan Riley Brown Fish Robinson and Price for next season. Providence and the Cincinnati club ended their second game in a tie after nine innings with two runs apiece.

E E Mix president C E Fr Sanford treasurer. Receipts for the year 2877 dollars expenditures 2066 dollars. First surplus in treasury since organization.
Montreal Oct 28 The Canadian Pacific railway management took from contractors a 59 mile section from Sudbury Junction to Pogamasing and inaugurated regular train service. So far coming difficulties have been few and engineers report progress toward opening the Montreal to the Rocky mountains route within six seven months.
In the court of commissioners of Alabama claims today judgments were rendered with interest at 4 percent from the date named. Notable items include No. 791, Antonio arate amounting to 1083 dollars from July 10, 1864. No. 01, Cath, also listed with sums and dates.
Reports describe Melvina Lussier of Providence drowning herself in a well amid ill health, Henry Rehberg of New Haven missing and presumed dead, a 70 year old woman dying after leaping from an orphan asylum window in Salem, a 27 year old man dying after an intoxicated wagon ride to South Williamstown, and the Admiral schooner reporting two crewmembers lost near Gloucester. Additional items note Veterans associations planning a headquarters, park land offers to Springfield, youth sentencing in Rochester, an autopsy in New York of a banker’s death, and a shooting incident near Fort Robinson involving Edgar Pettis. Continuous minor accidents include a painter’s scaffold collapse in Providence and a factory’s yearly production and leadership details, plus a gun wound near Hinsdale.
Elmira reports say John Arnot banker and congressman was injured by a gas explosion at his bank. The vault doors were torn, windows shattered, Arnot hurled from the vault onto a desk, barely conscious but alive, with possible internal injuries and risk to his eyes.
In Sanatobia Mississippi a mob of masked men attempted to seize Sam and Shakespeare Franklin from the jail to lynch them for poisoning five members of C Smiths family. Sheriff Jeff Williams and deputy Jeff Vesey repelled the attack firing upon the mob which broke the jail door. The two men had been sentenced to a long penitentiary term.
In Quibbec Oct ? a St Jacobin farmer left four children at home while he tended the field. The eldest 11 placed powder in a stove and poured explosive inside. The stove exploded destroying the stove and house. Three children were pulled from the ruins in a dying state. A fourth child was rescued and likely to recover.
Adjt. Gen. Kingley departed for Fort Worth to enforce surrender of Jim Courtwright to New Mexican authorities. Gov. Ireland forecasts resistance by Fort Worth residents and a likely bloodshed tonight as the clash unfolds.
Washington Oct 29 The international meridian conference today adopted a plan defining the universal day as a mean solar day beginning for the world at a fixed standard time, aligning global time reckoning and navigation practices.
The session approved constables Lorenzo B Kincard and William H Swift and named election officers across wards. Nathaniel Wales was confirmed as police commissioner for three years. Petitions urged macadamizing Abbey street and sewer works on Ninth and Holborn streets. Metropolitan railroad received trackage approvals in Boylston Tremont State streets. Several finances and public works items were adopted including armory rents and cemetery funding, with adjournment granted.
Terence Commiskey, a Cranston laborer, shot his wife through a pantry window after she refused to return. He then fired three more shots as she fled, but she survived. Commiskey surrendered at the fourth police station after the attack. the wife remains alive.
At least 2700 persons visited the fair yesterday marking a good showing for Monday. Today a large number of excursionists will arrive via the Eastern Maine Fitchburg Old Colony and New York and New England railroads to visit the fair. Electric railway sugar machine brick machine shoe factories and other novel exhibits will prove instructive and entertaining for those interested in mechanical inventions.
Albert G. Pratt of Meridan Conn aged 45 a carriage painter has just recovered from a hiccough attack lasting 12 days and 9 hours with no pause medical men say nine days of continuous hiccoughs usually prove fatal.
