Jealous Rivalry Ends in Fiendish Attack at Bowdoin Square

In Boston yesterday Gavin and Robbins, two friends contending for the same woman nicknamed Viola, quarrelled at Bowdoin Square Hotel. Robbins hurled a weapon and later a carbolic acid bottle, while Gavin dodged a railway signaling fuse intended to explode. A hotel waiter intervened, saving Gavin’s life. Robbins was hospitalized with acid in his system. The mysterious woman vanished. both men face uncertain fates.

Brookline Water Main Burst Floods Streets

A massive 48 inch water main ruptured at Dean and Clinton roads Brookline at 2 45 pm releasing a torrent that rose muddy river several inches and nearly struck four children. The break, blamed on aging pipes, flooded roads, damaged pavement worth about 1000, and forced pumping to halt while residents noted houses stood well above street level to avoid cellar inundation. Three quarters of a mile away the reservoir appeared to surge as water gushed from a 30 foot diameter hole for fifteen minutes before shutoff.
