Declines to Bury Soldier Sparks Church Controversy

In Bristol Connecticut the Rev. Dr. Henry D. Coe resigns as pastor after refusing to officiate at the funeral of Private William Schaeffer of the 102d Infantry killed in action. The American Legion planned a service at the local legion hall and later at the Baptist church, but Coe said Schaeffer was not a church member. The Legion consulted Rev. Ernest N. Wismer who advised honoring the service at his church.
