Church Plans Row of Model Tenements on Union Park

Archbishop OConnell proposes a new housing block on Union Park Street between Washington Street and Harrison Avenue. The project would be a historic church driven development costing possibly up to half a million dollars for the Boston diocese.

City plans widening of street and Harrison avenue

The plan hinges on city action and a $75,000 cost for widening. Archbishop O Con nells idea was first publicly expressed by the council. Mon signor Splaine said widening would enable church development of north side land and a model tenement block. Union Park is wide except in the targeted section, which narrows to 40 feet, 32 feet at Harrison end, and 26 feet at one point. The church owns about half the affected property and argues city spending will be recouped by higher taxes from the developed area.
