State Supreme Court ruling holds unions cannot force sympathetic strikes when the employer uses nonunion workers in similar work. It restricts compulsion by unions in trade disputes. It also finds a strike lawful as justified competition when employers assign work to non-union labor instead of union crafts.
Supreme Court decision in Pickett v Bricklayers Union upholds part of a Superior Court decree restraining the union from pressuring employers to discharge plaintiffs and breach their contracts. The court reverses the injunction to prevent union conspiracy to interfere with trades or further employment.
A midnight blaze at 128 and 130 Water street destroyed the upper floors of a four story brick building while the adjacent 35 and 37 Central street suffered heavy damage. Three firemen were hurt Hoseman Martin Kenneally Stickle and Captain Cronin. Damage estimated at about 5000.
Secretary Taft and Mrs Taft Assistant Secretary Bacon and Mrs Bacon General Funston and others arrived in Washington tonight from Cuba as Taft’s party ends its Cuba trip.
A forecast reports cloudy weather in Boston and vicinity with fresh easterly winds on Thursday and Friday. Northeast winds along the New England coast and brisk northeast along the mid Atlantic coast. Steamers to European ports face fresh to brisk northeast winds and cloudy conditions to the Grand Banks with storm warnings from Norfolk to Key West.
The thermometer at Thompson’s Spa, 219 Washington Street, shows a daily temperature sequence for yesterday starting early morning with 6 am readings and peaking near 104 degrees by mid afternoon, then continuing into the evening with several 104 degree marks before ending at 1906.
Hundreds of delegates at Tremont Temple heard President Roosevelt send hearty sympathy for temperance. The event featured addresses by John D. Long, Mrs. Stevenson, Mrs. Stevens, and foreign guests including Ina Smith and the Earl of Carlisle. The toastmaster and others praised temperance as a universal reform. Page 9 Fourth Column.
Democratic rallies for District Attorney Moran and the state ticket drew large crowds in Fitchburg City Hall and Gardner Town Hall. Moran, after a 40 minute speech, rested with his physician before proceeding to Gardner for another address. Williams and Brown joined Moran in Garder and Fitchburg stops, with logistics and travel details noted.
Huge crowds gather as District Attorney Moran and Guild officials appear in Gardner and Fitchburg. The events draw residents, with questions directed at the Guild about local policy and public safety.
Governor Guild assailed charges he blocked the famous women and minors' overtime bill in the Senate and urged national action. He denied appointing President Dana to the Superior bench for opposition to the bill, likening it to an unrelated appointment. The Lawrence crowd of over 1500 included mill workers and women, the largest Republican gathering in years, with orderly reception amid tense political charges.
In Philadelphia on October 17 Terry McGovern and Young Corbett fought a six round bout that ended in a draw. Corbett started strong and dropped McGovern to the floor in the second, but fatigue and weight disadvantage left both boxers unable to separate themselves. The match was among the bloodiest seen in the city with McGovern weakened by Corbett’s blows and Corbett weary from his exertions.
