The Duchess of Devonshire, wife of the lord president of the British Council, lost a jewelled satchel worth £30,000 on a Calais to London train. She alighted at Amiens and returned to report to police. No thief clue yet, satchel believed stolen after she briefly left her compartment.
A genuine blizzard sweeps the Southwest and West with heavy wet snow since 3 am driven by strong winds. Wires down and rail traffic delayed as temperatures drop and sidewalks lie under three inches of slush. The storm follows a day of rain and threatens suffering, especially on the ranges. Kansas City cut off from telegraph by the weather. Washington forecast notes fair New England with rising temps and clouded, rainy New York with warmer southeast winds.
