The Rev. Poindexter S. Henson of Hanson Place Church Brooklyn will become Tremont Temple pastor if the church votes unanimously to call him at next Friday’s meeting. Deacons and the executive committee favor the call with only one dissenting vote.
Paul Schmidt the murderer of Josephine Meads is known to have appeared to his victim during her Boston stay. Meade kept this from cousins the Hartnetts at 84 Winthrop street Charlestown and to her mother in Los Angeles. Miss Gertrude Halliday says Schmidt confronted Meade last January in Charlestown and the incident upset her for days. Seniors plan to send flowers and sympathy to the Meade family while the Hartnetts arrange to travel to Los Angeles for the funeral.
Mrs. Gray, a recent bride, battled a burglar who entered via an open pantry window and stole about $100. She knocked the lamp to extinguish it, chased him through the kitchen, and struck him with a flatiron. He escaped with minor injuries and a vague 6 foot 7 inch, 30 year old description.
Ex Governor John D Long praised the press and defended Colonel William A Gaston at a Massachusetts Republican dinner at Young’s Hotel. He noted press power, while Bates pressed the lawfulness of campaigns. The event featured speeches by A E Winship John O Winship and Robert Luce as Senator H e Gent.
Springfield report states two year old Donald G. Partridge, son of James D. Partridge, was instantly killed when struck by a north bound street car on Main Street. The mother collapsed upon seeing the body and was hospitalized.
Slippery rails and a bulky automobile caused a collision between a trolley car and an auto owned by J. S. Bennett of Boston in Northboro. Mrs. Bennett was thrown to the ground and required a doctor but is not believed seriously injured.
Alfred Kehew also known as Fred Haskell faced a larceny charge for $1150 in diamonds. The case was continued until October 28 with bail set at $2000 in Municipal Court.
An ad touts Horsford's Acid Phosphate as a valuable tonic that strengthens the entire system. It also promotes a 40 mile autumn ride for 40 cents on the Boston and Worcester air line, highlighting travel affordability.
A local notice states Father John's Medicine cured bronchitis and colds. The claim names Mrs. J. F. Cooney of KA Scotia St., Boston, and specifies it is not a patent medicine.
Elijah Dowie the Zion Prophet and his wife Mrs Dowie faced rumors of wealth while 4000 followers gathered in New York. A diamond brooch worth 1500 was stolen from Dowie’s wife in the private car of Nickel Plate president shortly after arrival at Grand Central. Carl F Stern, Dowie’s daughter and police chief’s wife, announced the robbery saying the brooch was placed on a table before the thieves fled.
A Boston resident, Albert Baker of 434 Tremont Street, endorses Fr. John’s Medicine for coughs colds and bronchitis after two years of use. The note presents a personal testimonial rather than official medical approval.
Clarence S. Darrow, Chicago lawyer and labor ally, warns that American labor faces destruction unless courts change their rulings against unions. He cites Vermont and other jurisdictions strict on injunctions and union liability, urging unions to emulate English workers in politics and to press for fair treatment from judges and corporations. He notes Baer of the Reading railroad as a possible sign of corporate retribution against anti-striker actions and praises fair dealing with workers.
