Water Commissioner Murphy resigns to enter mayoral race
The Boston mayor accepts the resignation of Water Commissioner John R. Murphy, effective at noon today. Acting water commissioner will be Benjamin W. Wells, who will simultaneously run both the water and streets departments, ending the fight for the vacancy. Murphy’s resignation letter is dated October 10, 1899, and addressed to Mayor Josiah Quincy.
