Soldiers Taken and Escaped Return Tell of Rebel Strength
From Banks's Column Daxrnestown Oct 14 one NY 34th soldier captured two weeks ago on a scout opposite Col Sears encampment was returned to Fairfax Court House and escaped. He says no large rebel forces between Great Falls and Leesburg. Mutinies in two Mississippi regiments left Great Falls three weeks ago. Remaining rebels scattered at Winchester Martinsburg Sheppardstown and Hancock. A full regiment at Hancock guarded a salt post. The war on liquor dealers has destroyed and confiscated $1000 worth. The drunken acts near Nealsville led to arrests and court martial. Some regiments lack winter clothing and feel frost. All was quiet along the Potomac from Great Falls to the Seneca mouth.
