New York World prints excerpts from Rear Admiral Cary T. Grayson letter to an unnamed New York friend. Grayson says no new disease, contradicting circulating rumors about the President. Cabinet officers plan to handle important matters, noting Wilson’s condition improves after a troubled day.
Bob a 13 year old half breed cavalry horse and veteran of Soissons and Chateau Thierry won the opening 60 mile leg of the 300 mile cross country endurance race from Fort Ethan Allen to Norwich University stables in 10 hours. He led 14 mounts, mostly Arab and Morgan horses, and is the only entry with overseas service.
Lieutenant Belvin W. Maynard the Baptist preacher-aviator crossed the Sierra Nevada in 59 minutes on the return leg across the continent. He told reporters he would reach New York on Friday after landing at Battle Mountain for the night.
Contenders near the coasts show reluctance to resume the race after hard travel and snow storms. Walter R. Caswell, bored by waiting for a second forgery, added larceny to his crimes in Portsmouth New Hampshire. The First National Bank served as the scene for both acts.
Caswell, living with James Fraher on Deer Street, forged Fraher’s signature for $100, cashed it, bought clothes, then forged more checks at First National. A bystander woman retrieved $6 from another bankbook before Caswell’s arrest as a policeman arrived. The scene ended with a plea for a life sentence.
Traffic on the Old Colony division of the New Haven road was delayed two hours last night after a collision between the Cape-bound express and a switching engine at Braintree depot. No injuries were reported though the passenger train carried many travelers returning from work in Boston.
