A Postman bought twenty plunkers mileage tickets from the New York and New England line and used one to ride to Brookline. A Boston and Albany brakeman rejected the ticket after inspection, prompting the Post to report the incident as a test of the mileage ticket rule.
In New York on Oct 13 a closing banquet at Lenox Lyceum honored Columbus with decorations from America Italy and Spain. Vice-President Morton presided for President McKinley absent due to his wife’s illness. Speeches by Mayor Grant Secretary Foster ex Presidents Hayes and Cleveland and others followed Bernstein’s Band played Hail to the Chief.

Meunier, his alleged accomplice, is pursued and expected to be caught within a week.
State Attorney Trefry and Bank Examiner Locke examined the defunct Stockbridge Bank in Pittsfield.
