A Boston shop advertises turn-down collars four in a box for 15 cents and promotes Medlicott underwear sets from 1.50 to 8.00. They tout English driving gloves 1.25 to 1.75 and buckskin gloves 0.75 to 8.75, cardigans 1.50 to 3, plus toothbrushes 15 cents at 82 North Street.
Dexter Me Oct 18 prisoners in the bank robbery case face crowds as the alibi story of young Stain dominates discussion. Lawyers and locals discuss Andrews Treated as suspect, while others doubt the confession. Authorities expect arraignment and possible Bangor grand jury action.

Missouri Pacific train collision with accommodation train. A woman killed. several injured in Pittsburgh bankers convention resolutions. Eight patients dead at Newburg asylum. New York Yacht Club hosts dinner for General Paine and Edward Burgess.
Rumors claim President Grévy may resign over the Caffarel affair. General Caffarelli faces removal of the Legion of Honor and pension cuts. The London Standard reports the arrest of General Boulanger. Also noted is the death of Mrs. Mulock Craik, author of John Halifax Gentleman.
Today in the city the weather stays cool and fair. Ex detective Hersom’s larceny case was continued for a week to allow witnesses. Harvard beat Yale in tennis at New Haven. Women typesetters discussed forming a union. The common council meeting was contentious. Stock market activity showed gains with buying in Atchison West End and San Diego.
The Pullman Palace Car Company raised its capital by 25 percent at the annual meeting. The capital now stands at 15 920 000 with a 1 536 884 surplus. President George M Pullman said the increase funds new equipment and future expansion. Directors may issue the additional stock to stockholders at par in proportion to holdings.
Telegrams from Maine suggest Stain and Cromwell seek to prove an alibi by locating Medfield residents Thomas Barney John Bullard Gus Fitts Clinton French and Joseph Johnson but few recall the two men on February 22 1878. Witnesses fear retaliation while investigators review old ledgers and records for clues.
The Bankers Convention in PirrssurG Penn Oct 18 saw larger attendance. Resolutions urged rapid debt extinguishment, continued Treasury bond purchases, andTexas regulation for uniform private banking laws. Nominating committee named Murray of New York and Parsons of St Louis. A silver coinage report urged suspension of US silver dollar coinage until international agreement is reached, and the convention adjourned.
A new political club named the Republican National League was organized in Washington with officers led by President General Edward F. Beal and Vice Presidents W. W. Dane N. Hower H. A. Villard Fred Douglass ex Senator Cragin and Colonel W. A. Gook. The chaplain is Rev John P. Newman and the group aims to model after the Union League Club of New York.
In an October 13 report, Germany will not send a warship to Morocco. Instead Berlin assigns protection of Germans in Morocco to England. The decision is viewed as evidence of cordial entente between the German and British governments.
London reports Mr. Chamberlain greeted by an enthusiastic Ballymena crowd in Ireland. He argued loyalty of Ulster and warned against severing the Ireland Britain link, urging minority voices be heard in constitutional change. Also notes Mr. Bright's attack on Gladstone leaflet and a Mitchelstown murder verdict appeal pending.
Paris dispatch reports the Sultan of Morocco is better and appeared at the palace to mount his horse, a scene witnessed by guards and attendants. Separate items note Spain's settlement over Ponape murders and indemnity, and Berlin reports weak Crown Prince with failed Mackenzie treatment plus a return of symptoms. Sir William Gull reportedly paralyzed but mentally clear.
Last Saturday M. M. Mashke a Harvard sophomore was caught taking $11 from the clothes of J. A. Thomas another student. He was arrested and on Monday fined 50 and costs in Cambridge District Court. President Eliot expelled Mashke and notified his parents in Cleveland Ohio.
The Boston Press Rifle Association holds its annual event at Walnut Hill. Individual scoring runs 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a team match at 1 p.m. Trains depart Boston and Lowell depots to Walnut Hill at 7:30 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m., with Montvale service at 9:05 and 10:15 a.m. connecting by barge to the range.
General Charles J. Paine and designer Edward Burgess were feted at a Delmonico dinner by the New York Yacht Club. Commodore Gerry sat with them as the America's Cup boat the Thistle and its crew were hailed, with a toast of Keep Astern and speeches praising progress.
The Republican convention for the western district on November 7 met in Pawtucket and nominated Warren C. Arnold of Glocester, a 48 year old woollen manufacturer with a rural background and little prior political profile. He led Professor Williams of Brown by a wide margin, but is not expected to defeat Democratic nominee Judge Bradley.
