New York Oct 12 The Thomson Houston Electric Light Company warns customers of the American system they will be prosecuted for infringing regulators. It says suit has begun and claims only its regulator and one other system can operate without patent infringement. Proponents call the claim ridiculous noting many modern advances have been adopted by older firms. The American company cites eminent patent counsel who deems its patents valid and calls the Thoron Houston action weak.
R. S. Hicks cashier of the Stafford National Bank is a large defaulter. Checks drawn on the Third National Bank of Springfield amounting to 13200 were un backed by funds, with total loss estimated over 100000 and Hicks admitting 73000. He is held in Norwich after a short inquiry and bond of 40000 posted to appear Oct 24.
Mixweapons Minn Oct 12 A morning Knights of Labor assembly adopted a clause pledging support to Blair educational bill and extending eight hour law protections to letter carriers. Powderly recommendations for public telephones and telegraphs postal savings banks and a labor department were concurred in. Labor legislation to be pushed in state legislatures and Congress.
A Parker House fire on Chapman Place caused smoke on the fourth story and included a small larder room fire with losses around 150 dollars and total loss under 2000 dollars. The fire department arrived quickly after an 8 pm alarm and contained the blaze with insurance covering the damage. A separate fire at the Boston and Main freight depot in Exeter, New Hampshire, destroyed depot and contents with an estimated loss near 20000 dollars.
