In Rockland Maine on October 13 a jury convicted Ralph Burton Richards of manslaughter in the Cain murder trial after Judge Appleton’s charge favored conviction. Edward Freeman Grose was found not guilty and freed. Richards awaits sentencing while Charles W. Smith received a life term for killing his infant son.

Monday evening the wife of Hon. Tarrant Hubley of Bennington Centre correctly used laudanum by mistake for cough medicine and will recover. On Thursday morning James Hurley was found insensible at Elm Tree house Bennington with a low kerosene light burning. doctors say coal oil gas caused asphyxia and his condition is critical. Charles L. Sibley a New York express engineer on the Bloomington and Rutland railway fell or was knocked from his cab near Wallingford Thursday and died soon after. he left a widow and two children and had twenty years on the line.

The drowning victim with Henry Whitney at Coffin's Beach Gloucester was William Nudd, of Boston, about twenty. Two freight trains collided at East Douglas destroying engines and cars, about $8 000 loss. In Providence a 4 year old son of James Freeman died Wednesday from burns. A 12 year old, William McKenna, lost his right foot under a backing car on the Stonington track. Byron E. Dean, 12, son of Chas. E. Dean of Pawtucket, died after being dragged by a tethered cow when the rope around his wrist caused the animal to pull him. The funeral of artist Richard M. Staigg in Boston was held at Trinity church, Newport, with many officials and notable attendees present.
The Hartford chief of police Chamberlin undergoes trial before commissioners over charges that he is not the right man for the job, failed to impartially curb crime, took bribes, did not destroy certain gambling tools as required by law, and that the city seeks his removal.
