Six families fled through woods as flames swept from the Boston Ice Company's South Weymouth plant in the early morning. The blaze caused about $60,000 in losses and spread into surrounding woodlands with camps and cottages nearby.
A blaze driven by a high wind at 3 am roared toward Pond and Thicket streets on the town edge near a 150 acre forest. About 50 houses along the line faced destruction while residents prepared to defend their homes as embers ignited nearby woods. The ice company Plant burns, its icehouse and buildings destroyed. icehouse empty. Firemen struggle against the wind and decide to save cottages at the woods edge, letting dwellings deeper into the woods burn.
An official Berlin statement claims Britain blew up 10 Antwerp forts and Belgium lost 20,000 prisoners. Ghent is occupied by German troops. Allies repelled several German attacks between Lassigny and Roye. Cavalry advanced near La Bassee Estaires and Hazebrouck. French marine fusiliers repulsed Germans on their left wing. German losses 200 killed 50 prisoners. French losses 9 killed 39 wounded 1 missing. Vienna and Petrograd reports say Austrians forced Russians from Przemysl with reinforcements. Six more bombs hit Paris streets with no damage. French aviators pursued. Russian cruiser Pallada torpedoed by German submarine and sank with all crew.
London reports renewed cavalry movement pushing westward to sever communications between England and the northern coast of France, echoing early war efforts and recalling past operations aimed at disrupting supply and troop routes.
The Times correspondent reports on October 13 that 24 Antwerp forts were still resisting the bombardment. Fires blaze across the city overnight, with at least 20 visible from a distance as the defense continues.
