Lord Rosebery, Liberal leader, spoke at an Epsom agricultural dinner condemning unfriendly acts on the upper Nile. He defended the Grey declaration on Fashoda, warned against conceding Britain’s rights, urged Egypt’s interests be respected, and called for pacific settlement with France. He stressed national resolve and mutual respect in international law to prevent broader conflict.
Governor Tanner denounces the riot at Macoupin County as caused by company officials who brought in imported colored convicts and penitentiary workers. He asserts they precipitated the violence, calls for indictment by the grand jury, and a conviction for the heinous offense.
At Virden Illinois a day of riot between union miners and imported negro workers ended in bloodshed. A Chicago and Alton special with 206 black miners arrived at the stockade and gunfire erupted. Eight dead and many wounded, including J F Eyster superintendent of Climax Trading Company, who fought his way through a hail of bullets before being captured. The fight spread to Main street as miners and guards exchanged fire and police attempted to quell the chaos. Continued report promised on page 65.
The tenth district Republican convention at Wesleyan Hall finally nominated Congressman Samuel J. Barrows after 36 ballots plus 12 more. Key players included ex-Senator Towle of Ward 12 and Hon. John C. Cobb of Milton, who steered Barrows to victory amid clashes over Atwood and Paige.
Paris reports government dispatches to Major Marchand have been delivered via the Sirdar and courtesy of Britain. An officer with his reply will go to Cairo and be telegraphed back, likely arriving early next week. Informed circles expect Marchand to be allowed to return via Cairo amid hostile press. ST PETERsBURG notes push arbitration to settle the Fashoda Nile dispute with Britain and France.
