Bert C. Crawford of Melrose High brings three large melons to the office yesterday, claiming they are the biggest, heaviest, and most handsome fruits grown in Greater Boston this year.
The Wolf River variety apples weighed 44 ounces together with an 18 year old tree yielding another 20 ounce apple and a 1614 inch circumference fruit. Mr. Crawford notes the tree produced three barrels of apples, touted as Melrose’s finest this year.
Washington reports Rear Admiral Aaron Ward formerly supervisor of New York Harbor was placed on the naval retired list for age today.
The revenue cutter Seminole was wireless directed to hurry to the aid of the schooner Greenleaf Johnson in distress east of Beaufort South Carolina. The Johnson's crew remains aboard and has requested assistance.
London October 10 Colville Adrian de Rune Barclay was named councillor of the British embassy in Washington. He has served in diplomacy since 1894 and is 44 years old. His previous post was at Belgrade Servia.
Negotiations with General Manager Bardo of the New Haven and the Brotherhoods of Engineers and Firemen broke off today. Engineers' officials plan to seek an audience with President Howard Elliott before any further action, as revised rules were rejected and no road statement was issued.
Stenson Vance, 49, of 64 Chapel Street Norwood, killed himself by hanging in his cellar this afternoon after failing to cut his throat with a razor. His wife found the body upon returning from Boston and breaking in the locked cellar door.
The Atlantic Bank head was arraigned on charges of misapplication of bank funds.
The indictment charges former Atlantic National Bank president Edward P. Metcalf with misapplying about 200000 in bank funds, 150000 loss to the bank, aided by Orrion Farrar James Allen Henry Dekay and John Dekay of New York. Bail discussions followed as marshalling sought high sureties and the grand jury works through 24 counts.
In South Boston a tearful Mrs. Mary Anderson 30 confessed stealing to feed her children. She described a five week stay in a woodshed after her husband disappeared and she lost her home. A sympathetic witness recounted taking in the family briefly and then turning them away.
In Lenox on Oct 10 a dance for Naumkeag workers and invited guests filled the main ballroom. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Choate and Miss Mabel Choate hosted the event at Naumkeag, Pleasantville visitors absent. About 60 attendees, including 20 or more employees and friends, attended.

Mr and Mrs Michael McNamara of Grant Street Waltham celebrate their 50th anniversary at home assisted by their five children and many friends. Born in Ireland they moved to the United States as children and settled in Waltham 55 years ago. They were married Oct 11 1863 by Rev Patrick Flood at St Marys Church. Mass will be offered at St Marys today by Rev Timothy Brosnahan.
