Oct. 10 testimony from Dr. Gillette of Mutual Life Insurance reveals funds diverted to political aims. He states the company donated 40,000 to the Republican national committee last fall, 35,000 in 1900, and 15,000 in 1896 for campaign purposes.
Dr. Gillette testified he paid amounts personally in cash. Mr. McCurdy said he knew campaign contributions were made but not the amounts. He claimed no contributions existed before 1896 and no state or municipal contributions had ever been made. He denied knowledge of a $2500 contribution to the congressional campaign committee until last week’s testimony.
Newport Rhode Island reports the engagement of Miss Mary Honey to Hon Josiah Quincy of Boston. The wedding will occur soon in New York in private due to the recent death of Mr Quincy’s wife in January 1904.
The engagement links Miss Honey daughter of Colonel Samuel R. Honey a Newport lawyer and former Rhode Island official with Mr. Quincy noted for a private ceremony following the death of Mr Quin cy s late wife Mrs William R Tyler. New York Oct 10 sculptor Gutzon Borglum, creator of the annunciation and resurrection angels intended for St John the Divine, announced he destroyed the two figures after a dispute over whether they should be masculine or feminine.
