The New Orleans, a first class unprotected cruiser built in Britain, docked at Brooklyn Navy Yard in poor condition. U S Soldiers Drowning In Luzon River Crossings

Army units in Luzon suffer greater drownings than battle deaths in a two week period. Ten soldiers from the Twenty fourth Infantry perished in the Mariquina River on August 22 after a rope raft failed. Four from the Third Infantry died crossing the Bagbag River near Malolos as they advanced on Pilar. Corporal Peter Larson and Lieutenant Chauncey B Humphreys were heroic in rescue attempts. Seventeen men carried guns and ammo across swiftly flowing water, many losing footing.

The transport Newport arrived in San Francisco with 464 discharged regulase mainly from the Third Artillery Fourth Cavalry Fourteenth Infantry and thirty eight from the signal corps under Lt. Bailey.
