Antwerps defenses hold while flames rise across the city. Heavy shelling continues at a rate of about 20 per minute as forts falter. King Albert remains in Antwerp amid a civilian exodus, with about 20 000 troops and British units defending a besieged last ring.
Dutch refugees arrive in Holland at about five thousand daily as consuls report strain on relief efforts. About 450000 Dutch troops are mobilized along the frontier with many reservists returning from the United States. Belgian consul general Mali notes ships in Antwerp harbor being booby trapped and hopes Antwerp forts hold until Allied help arrives. He adds concern for art treasures in Antwerp cathedral and museum and fear of German use of Antwerp for strategic advantage.
Reports from Paris and London describe heavy fighting around Roye in northern France with 1600 prisoners taken over two days. Antwerp endures bombardment as German and Austrian air power target the city while Belgian defenders fight to hold the lines and keep the Belgians from retreating.
Special Cable reports shells falling on Antwerp at twenty per minute as German forces fully occupy the southeastern third fortified line. Reports from Roosendaal indicate all night fighting and heavy bombardment continuing near the besieged city.
