Fire engulfed the Home of the Good Shepherd at Edgington Lake near Wheeling West Virginia driving 250 girls and nuns into the streets. The blaze likely started from incense in the chapel and caused losses exceeding 50000 with insurance. Nuns and volunteers rescued and carried many children to safety. two nuns remained seriously ill from shock.
A wooden dormitory home for girls, starting in sleep, burned rapidly on a hillside with a west wind. Nuns and priests organized evacuations as watchmen sounded the fire drill.
