King Manuel of Portugal is under British protection as the royal yacht Amelie arrives in Gibraltar with the king, queen mother, dowager queen, and the Duke of Opor to. The king and queen mother visit the governor's summer residence at Europa Point amid hurried crew impressions. The Italian battleship Regina Elena sails to Cadiz to shuttle Dowager Queen Maria Pia if needed.
In Lisbon Oct 6 the city falls under revolutionary control with Theophile Braga named provisional president. Charles G. Washburn of Worcester supported anti Cannon tariff principles and forestry protection in a Republican State convention while Butler Ames stayed silent.
