Kill Daughters. SHE SHOT THEM FIRST. Then Poured Carbolic Acid

New York, Oct 5. Police in Kingsbridge report Mrs. Lillian Smith of Inwood Manhattan killed herself and her 6-year-old son Andrew with a gunshot and carbolic acid. She shot daughter Ethel 12 in the breast and poured carbolic acid on her. She then shot 4-year-old Mabel in the breast and poured carbolic acid on her. Ethel and Mabel were taken to a hospital.

Calef D. Symmes aged 88 died at his Lancaster home after a short illness. A former cashier and bank president, he survived a 50 year old attack by Otto Sutar who sought bank keys. Symmes safeguarded the culprit’s name for days, aiding capture and trial leading to Sutar’s dismissal and exile after prison time.

Robbed Ticket Office at Norfolk Downs Station

Thieves broke into the New Haven railroad ticket office between 12 15 a.m. and 6 a.m. Friday at Norfolk Downs, NY NH Hartford. They took about five cents in cash and a few tickets, leaving a screwdriver as payment. It appears the bandits were novices, as they did not attempt the locked cash drawer.

A boy of i1 years named John Ross suffered injuries after getting two fingers caught in a brick press at his home on 7 Sheridan Avenue in Glenwood yesterday. Authorities reported the incident and the boy was treated for the injuries.

Missing Brookline boy described by parents

A tall slim boy with light hair, last seen on an outward-bound Brookline avenue car. He wore brown bicycle pants, a dark sack coat and black bicycle cap. He has a slight speech impediment and has had mental spells. two years ago he wandered for two weeks. Any information on his whereabouts is welcome by his grieving parents.

Mystery death of Jessie Cobb in Androscoggin River

In Lewiston Maine a young woman Jessie Cobb of East Poland was found dead in the Androscoggin River near the canal headhouse on Sept 26. Autopsy reveals death by strangulation and the body was already dead when placed in the water, with a man seen accompanying her on Sept 16 whose identity is unknown.

Baptist association backs Newton Seminary collection drive

At the New Haven Baptist Association anniversary meetings in Southington on October 6, a resolution urged each church to contribute to the Newton Theological Seminary. It was announced that John D. Rockefeller pledged $150,000 if matched elsewhere. Rev. T A T Hanna of Shelton condemned Newton Seminary and the Chicago Baptist university for secular teaching, but the resolution passed.

Bones Found by Navy Yard Workers

Workmen at the navy yard unearthed bones totaling parts of at least three skeletons during trenching from the boiler room of the boat shop toward a spar shed. Bones, found Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, were sent for box storage. they likely come from sailors or marines who died at the yard or hospital about 50 years ago near Chelsea Street.

Charles C Stratton 71 senior proprietor of the Fitchburg Tally Sentinel and active in Odd Fellows and Knights of Honor groups died today in Fairley Vermont, his birthplace. He was a prominent local figure in Fitchburg.
