Patrick Smith of Long Island City fought Patrick Dempsey's unknown of Greenpoint for $200, lasting 24 rounds. The unknown won after both fighters were badly punished. Smith, 23, 150 pounds. the unknown 24, 153 pounds. Two ex-pugilists acted as seconds and a Brooklyn sport served as referee.
A Northern Pacific freight train was derailed by a washout at Fond du Lac, sixteen miles from Duluth, sending the locomotive six coal cars and two empties into the St Louis river. Engineer Harter Fireman Stephen Judkins and Brakeman Olsen plunged with the wrecked train and perished.
In Bluff, Iowa, Charles Austin, after quarreling with his wife, fired three times injuring her. He then turned the revolver on himself and fatally shot himself. Local authorities investigate motive and circumstances surrounding the domestic tragedy.
New York dispatch details Republican efforts to win Ohio by large cash infusions from Blaine allies including Astors and Gould. It cites pension office pressure on voters, fears of Democratic gains, and plans for rallies in Cleveland and Cincinnati as election day nears.
At a Fair view New Jersey mass meeting, Gustave Kobbe of New York contrasted Cleveland with Blaine, criticizing Blaine’s foreign policy and Irish policy. Blaine writes from Bel air Ohio replying to charges against him. He denies advocating a 21 year naturalization residency and says he opposed such a change in citizenship law. He explains he voted for a tax on mine proprietors, not on individual miners, and notes the tax was repealed 15 years ago. He also denies ownership of coal land in Ohio.

Special Despatch reports Mrs Nancy Farwell a wealthy church member recounting years of dealings with Rev Dr Ball of Buffalo. She says Ball begged money, claimed donor comparisons with Grover Cleveland, and sought to justify requests as hymn book purchases. She accuses him of impropriety and deceit in multiple encounters.
A carpenter's shop on State Street faced an incendiary act in Newport. The mayor announced a reward for the culprit's capture. Extended local disruptions followed as other area incidents and arrests were noted across Massachusetts and Vermont.
At the Long Champs meeting a mob attacked English jockey Sharpe after disputing his ride. He was knocked from his horse and beaten on the ground, while the horse suffered blows. Sharpe was carried to a weighing room in a critical condition as soldiers guarded the enclosure. Rioters broke in and a jocke y was seized by three riders but saved by police intervention. A second jockey was maltreated but escaped.
A Bay State club hosts a banquet for Judge William C. Endicott and the state ticket tonight at the Reve house. A large rally is planned in Boston next week with prominent speakers including J. G. Abbott and many others. campaigns spread across wards and towns with several meetings scheduled.
Mr Spofford launches the seventh district congressional campaign in Beverly with a public meeting at Town Hall. Col Jonas I French and Hon Richard S Spofford spoke as the Salem Cadet band played and a campaign flag and fireworks display animated the crowd. Spofford defended party differences, urged tariff revision to aid American workers, discussed centralized government, labor issues, and foreign policy impacts on commerce and the isthmus.
Hon Charles F Lilley of Lowell remains determined to canvass for Congress if a majority nomination is won at the convention. He had said he would not want the nomination unless unanimously tendered, with delegates free to decide. The entry of Mayor Breen of Lawrence was alleged to be the result of a Republican plot aimed at aiding Col Allen of Lowell.
The final week of the 1884 league baseball season nears, with Providence and Boston atop the standings and Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Detroit in the trailing group. At the state headquarters on Saturday a meeting of the ninth district committee and city and town committees discussed Henry E. Foales of Milford as the Democratic candidate for congress. About 75 gentlemen attended. Foales announced plans to campaign in every city and town if needed. John W. Corcoran presided and reports on the congressional outlook followed. The group unanimously expected Foales to win the solid party vote and gain cross party support from the People's Party and some Republican and independent voters.
East Boston independents plan a Lyceum hall rally with Col. Higginson Rev. Chamberlain and Moorfield Storey speaking and a separate lower hall event with German speakers. A ward 6 prohibitory rally features Luscomb Gordon Barton Colcord and McCready. Democrats in ward 5 plan flag raising and rally at Park street and City square with Doherty Murphy Punkett. City People's Party meeting tonight. caucuses set for Oct 13. Conventions scheduled for Oct 14 in New Bedford and Taunton with multiple district party activities in Charlestown.
Portland Me Oct 5 The United States case against Sergt Dennis Kelly moves toward completion as defence opens with allegations of perjury and accident in the shooting. Kelly recounts his 27 years in service at Fort Popham, detailing fort responsibilities and past engagements under Burnside, McClellan, Meade and Grant. The court adjourns to Monday for further testimony.
A Kansas City to Santa Fe passenger train struck a cross-tie obstruction near Emporia junction, derailing a following freight and killing fireman Scott. Engineer lightly injured. Suspect cross-tie placed to wreck the passenger train. Reward offered: $1000 by the railroad and $500 by the governor.
In Petersburg Virginia on October 5 the closure of all cotton factories in the city and vicinity leaves over 700 workers including men women and children without jobs amid water scarcity from a prolonged drought. A benefit performance of Pinafore will be staged next Friday night at the Academy of Music by local ladies and gentlemen to aid the unemployed workers.
A Chattanooga dispatch says the south is reviving its iron industry. The Woodstock iron company of Alabama just contracted for 13,000 tons of car wheel iron at 20.50 per ton. It is the largest order in the south since the downturn began, with reports of rising inquiries from other firms.
Funeral services for actor Frank B S Chanfrau were held this afternoon in Lone Branch New Jersey. The obituary notes his acting career and the service location as the Quinqufau chapel.
The large attendance at a Cedar Avenue service included Mr. Chanfrau’s company and many theatrical figures. Eight pallbearers led by John H. MecVicker, John W. Albaugh, William Henderson and others, with Rev. Elliot D. officiating, praised him as neighbor and actor. He was laid to rest in the Chanfrau burial plot at Branchburg cemetery near Long Branch.

Rog Oct 5 cholera totals show 207 cases and 126 deaths in Italy in the last 24 hours. Naples records 49 cases and 33 deaths, Genoa 20 cases and 20 deaths. Madrid reports Alicante three new cases and two deaths. Marseilles notes two deaths with no new cases. Eastern Pyrenees tally four deaths with no fresh infections.
Two arson attempts occurred at Nantasket beach Saturday night with kerosene. About 10 o'clock a window was broken at Leavitt's cottage near the Pacific House, signaling the incidents in the beachfront area.
Combustibles saturated with oil were thrust inside and set alight, but the blaze was extinguished with little damage. Shortly after, the Humane Society building on Stony Beach was fired on the exterior, quickly found and put out. Property owners are alarmed and several men patrol for the culprit.
Ernest Graham Dewey aged 25 was arrested on forged papers and swindling charges after allegedly obtaining about 200 from American Benefit Life Insurance by using fictitious applicants. A Roxbury resident was run over at State and Washington by a horse causing serious injuries. A rubber factory accident injured James McGuerty, resulting in an arm amputation. Other incidents include a tenant scam at 1 State Street, a freight train collision near Atlantic avenue, a Charlestown burglary, knife assault, loitering fine, and a group arrest for robbery near Merrimac and Sudbury streets.
After pardoning Charles H. Foster in 1877 he opened a livery stable at East Canton street. He drew Ira T. Litchfield and other investors into the venture, mortgaging the stable to raise funds. Losses spread to lawyer Samuel Thompson Farwell and Way & Whitney brokers. Foster allegedly falsified sales, hid assets, and fled town on Sept 29. Estimated booty totals $60,000.
Bishop Bosse appeals to the Canadian government over 4060 destitute Labrador fishermen driven to hunger by failed fisheries. Mrs. Jennie Carroll was found dead in a boarding house on Penn Street. James Carroll was arrested on suspicion of causing her death after Apartment owner Mrs. Reddington heard Jennie say her husband would kill her for drinking. Carroll claimed ignorance of the manner of death.
Mrs Julia Ward Howe has accepted the position of chief of the womans department for the New Orleans exposition. All regional work will be grouped under her direction in the government building at New Orleans. Massachusetts will likely showcase art science and literature. Work begins at once as Director General Burke plans an elaborate department program.
In Cambridge court William Bean was fined ten dollars and costs for larceny. In Chelsea court John Connelly, for liquor law violation, was fined seventy five dollars and costs appealed. An infant found on James Cross's front stoop at Highland and Rogers in Lynn. Mrs Margaret Feyn, 59, found dead in bed Saturday morning on Walnut Street Hyde Park. Paul Sheppard fined one hundred dollars in Salem for liquor law violation. George C Stickney of Beverly fined ten dollars for assault. The governor and council will make their annual visit to the state almshouse on Wednesday. At the monthly board of health, lunacy and charity meeting, Dr Walcott and Dr Fallon and Messrs Noble and Dean were elected as delegates to the St Louis conference of the board of health and to attend the national board of health session held then.
