The scene in Auburn Maine as Armenians arriving to fill shoe factory posts faced hostile crowds. Stones flew near the Armenian boarding house after work stopped, police barely contained the mob, and guards sealed pathways to Lewiston. Mayor’s proclamations urged public peace while unions claim strength and a mass meeting aims for peace talks with manufacturers.
Washington reports the wedding of Commander W H Whiting USN to Ah Fong a Chinese Hawaii bride will occur after Navy orders retire him from command of the Alliance and grant a month’s leave to travel to San Francisco. The Alliance will voyage to New York for refitting as a training ship with Yorktown taking its place.
John Canning of Charlestown left his boarding place two weeks ago saying he would seek work in Dedham. He has not been heard from since. Two fellow boarders searched Dedham Centre with no information. Canning, 2 years old, with heart disease, was despondent and unemployed. Charlestown friends fear for him and planned to report the disappearance to police.
Negotiations are pending for the purchase of a Washington residence for 35000 for Mgr Satolli. The deal will be settled at a Catholic bishops meeting in Baltimore this month. The house formerly belonged to Justice Bradley and later to Senator Douglas, with Grant and Sherman once living nearby.
Three Chinese gardeners living about two miles from Butte were found shot to death midday Saturday. All victims were shot in the head and one was riddled with buckshot. The motive is believed robbery after $600 was taken, with the crime unsolved.

Salem October 2 Judge Safford files finding on the death of William H Dodge killed by a train on August 14 The finding states the cause of the accident is not clear but implies Dodge was ill and crossing the track when struck The death is ruled a pure accident with no blame to the railroad.
Two Canadian smugglers Thomas McCormack and Henry Nedecor were arrested in Troy New York by Treasury agents. Quebec broker J B Laliberte is described as the richest and most successful U S customs offender in Canada. He misleads buyers with cheap goods and promises delivery free at the buyer’s home for a small fee. Ottawa to New York and Boston routes are cited with past seizures and a notable Brown case in New Hampshire. The piece promises more on page 2.
An advertisement lists overcoats in latest styles from 25 to 88 pounds, winter suits from 9 to 20 dollars, guards on pockets from 12 to 14 dollars, brown duck coats and leather jackets at low prices, flannel lining noted, Ulster coats from 40 dollars to higher end, with notable sizes 32 to 44.

At a Salem wedding reception on Derby Street eight wounds were treated. John Varenski sought Dr J T Gallagher for dressing after a Saturday night disturbance. A knife inflicted a ten inch thigh gash and a two inch chest wound. Nine stitches were applied and two other injuries were dressed.

Miss Clara Barton announces that the Red Cross has assumed relief for Sea Islands sufferers. It will provide housing feeding clothing and nursing for about 3000 people for eight months with no government aid and funded solely by American charity from Beaufort South Carolina.
Louis De Pinvia, 27, of Harris street, was arrested by Patrolman Trask of Station 1 after he allegedly assaulted someone with a loaded revolver on Harris street. The suspect was found fighting a stranger. the other man fled as the officer approached.
George L. Hutchins 35 of 410 Boylston street was arrested on charges of uttering a forged promissory note for 200 dollars bearing the name of George W. Lougee of Spring lane. It is alleged he forged Lougee's name to a 100 dollar check as partial payment. Hutchins formerly worked at City Hall and later claimed a wool business at 261 Devonshire street.
Sister Mary Constant died in the East Boston Convent of the Sisters of Notre Dame early yesterday. She first served in East Boston for about 27 years, later moving to Woburn Chicopee and Lowell, and recently returned to teach in a parochial school. The funeral is set for 10 a.m. today at the Church of the Holy Redeemer.
Hon. Joseph Martin Russell longtime Malden resident dies after a long illness at his home 142 Summer Street. He was among the citys oldest and best known citizens with a long record of public service in Malden and state affairs.
