Grand Rapids Hotel Fire and Cotton Mill Burn

The City Hotel in Grand Rapids Michigan burned yesterday with inmates escaping danger. McGoffey’s cotton mill at Preston England, with 30 000 spindles, has been destroyed. A series of other fires included Timothy Callan’s barn in New Bedford with partial contents loss about 500 dollars, and Mitchell and Finney’s shoe factory in Epsom New Hampshire damaged by fire with losses around 1500 dollars and no insurance. The blaze at the mill cost 100 operatives their jobs.

Brockton Labor Troubles Spread Across Shoe Industry

In Brockton Mass on November 27 the district executive board of the Knights of Labor ordered workers out of shops unless official settlements are made. The strike widens with about 5000 unionists including women stitchers and several craft unions active in Bridgewater and surrounding towns. Public order remains good with no arrests recorded.

Riot erupts in Pitrsburg Pennsylvania with 200 strikers occupying the mines and injuring several men. Sheriff Chambers arrests about 100 and requests more officers from Washington. A boat of provisions is sent to the strikers while workmen at Nei's mines prepare to defend themselves before daybreak.
