She walked to the river and plunged into twelve feet of water near the upper bridge. Her body was recovered a short distance below frozen in shallow water. She had spent her father’s property and worked as a kitchen helper.
Walter White bound over for assault with knife and pistol at Gloucester court. Margaret Campbell, 45, housekeeper for James Cusick of Fall River, found dead in bed Sunday night after 24 hours in bed with no illness. Westfield whip makers join other local manufacturers in boycotting Boston and Albany railroad over privileges and station issues. James Clarke arrested in Foxboro for assault to kill Thomas Tierney after a dance at Daniel Bergeson’s house. Tierney, a foreman at the foundry, injured. Clarke’s brother Andrew Sackett and W H Rugg of Waterbury arraigned in Great Barrington for alleged complicity in the ti No. tarred and assaulted Mrs. Sullivan in Sandisfield in 1881. Additional arrests in Connecticut expected. Officer Kellogg handling requisitions.
On trial last week for conspiracy and arson in Putnam, Willis and Warren were found not guilty Saturday. A $3,000 legacy from Mrs. Harriet Korn of Troy to a nonexistent ladies aid society is awarded to United Workers of Norwich. State election results show Waller leading for governor with 59,014 votes and Bulkley at 54,853. other offices listed with small majorities. A fatal domestic tragedy in Norwich ends with the husband dead and the wife killed, while the infant child survives.
In Newport Rhode Island on November 27 Judge Sitness presided over liquor cases. Charles Bickerton faced three counts and received 30 days in Providence county jail plus a fine and costs. One defendant, Mr Atwater, was acquitted. The city paid $1500 to Mayor Franklin for basis of evidence. Spotters hired from the north testified, reputedly untrustworthy, drawing sympathy for Bickerton who had an otherwise solid reputation. The court room was crowded and further convictions were expected to be limited by strong defense.
The Clandon from New Orleans for Bremen dragged at Roche’s wharf and struck the Allan mail steamer Polynesian at the Southside railway wharf. Several plates were broken on Polynesian causing a water leak. cargo is being discharged to right the ship. Clandon will proceed to Bremen after security for damage is arranged. Polynesian endured stormy crossing from Liverpool with heavy gales and a damaged boat.
The Alabama State Senate caucus of Democratic members met tonight in Montgomery and renominated John T. Morgan for United States senator by acclaimation.
Senator Hale lays out a fine estate near Tilsworth while Hon Edwin Vlye and Miss Frye of Maine visit the American House. Hannibal Hamlin sails home on Saturday aboard the Servia. Henny James returns to London for the winter. Mr Howells remains in Switzerland. John Z. Goodrich of Stockbridge, once Boston port collector, is ill and not expected to live long. Henry L. Pierce stays at his Dorchester home. Winslow B. Lucas is commission altered to justice of the peace for the commonwealth. Joseph Cook praised by the Gospel Banner for endorsing a universe creation plan. Col B. S. Lovell receives a carved-cane head of Gen Butler from Togus veterans. Mrs Frances Hodgson Burnett left Lancashire for Tennessee at 13. The portrait notes her English features and blue eyes.
The citizens convention in Tremont temple nominated Dr. Samuel A. Green for mayor and Newton Talbot for street commissioner. Committees were formed to nominate aldermen and school officials, with speakers urging cross party cooperation and civic focus over party lines. The Gloucester and Lawrence caucuses followed with nominations for aldermen and council seats.
