American forces move through Belgium toward the German frontier with tumultuous Belgian receptions. No German treachery shown yet as rapid retreat leaves great stores behind. Roads are crowded with German helmets as troops advance toward the frontier.
American forces report large supplies of ammunition and big artillery abandoned by retreating Germans. Most villages remain intact with limited looting as the U S Army of Occupation advances well into Belgium within a few hours’ march.
In France Wilson will urge League of Nations and a square deal for Germany, aid for Russia, reduction of armaments, and freedom of seas. He also plans an abroad visit to press these aims.
Democratic Senators report after two hours with President Wilson that he intends to remain in France until the major work of the peace conference is finished. He will exercise all presidential powers from abroad, using wireless and cable for contact and despatch boats if needed. He may conduct executive business from the American embassy in Paris, technically on American soil.
