Billings sworn in as port collector in Boston

Edmund Billings was sworn in as collector of the port of Massachusetts at a ceremony in Tremont Street. He nominated Eli Perry as deputy collector. Perry, a Republican, has 25 years in customs service and eight years as deputy in charge of the entry division. Billings, 52, succeeds Edwin A. Curtis and is the first Democrat in 16 years to hold the post after the recent reorganization of Massachusetts ports.

Suffragettes End Meeting in Sheffield Disturbance

In Sheffield England November 17 suffragettes disrupted a Labor party no conscription meeting led by Socialist MP Philip Snowden from Blackburn. Stewards and male supporters clashed. several stewards were kicked and bruised. The meeting was abandoned after half an hour as police were called.

City Club to Move to New Boston Home in Fall 1914

At the annual meeting the Boston City Club announced a new home on Somerset street and Ashburton place expected ready for occupancy in early fall 1914. The executive committee cited reciprocal club relations with 11 cities, improved finances, a profit exceeding last year by over 1600, a 4480 membership with 750 on the waiting list, and 1912 end membership at 3286. Fire on Essex Street Grips Top Floor

A brisk blaze broke out on the top floor of a six story brick building on Essex Street shortly before 10 p m. Fire Chief Mullen dispatched crews who, aided by automatic sprinklers, quickly contained the flames. The fire started among trimmings in the workshops of M Callman a skirt and dress manufacturer. A large quantity of water was needed to quell the fire.
