The Boston Post and the Boston Herald each filed $10,000 libel suits claiming good faith and lack of malice. The actions seek damages for alleged defamatory statements published about the papers.
Attorneys Elder Crowley and ex congressman Knox appear for plaintiff Ransom McCrillis and for the Boston Post and Herald defense argues good faith. The libel suit over McCrillis discharge from the internal revenue service follows a 1900 discharge and related alleged irregularities. A jury panel with 14 jurors is drawn as McCrillis wife sits nearby.
A massive fire at Boston Pier 5 and adjacent wharves caused total loss of the Warren line Pier 5 and extensive damage to Piers 4 and 6. Steamers L P Holmblad Canopic and Roman burned and warped. In Salem the Democratic caucuses produced Charles with a plurality of 5683 votes over rivals. James H. Doyle and Cornelius J. Keyes also featured in the tally. The results reflect party support patterns in the local contest.
