The Harvard and Yale athletic committees move toward resuming rivalries in baseball and track while football remains ruled out this year The two colleges explore a joint spring schedule with the dual track league in place and hope to meet Yale as soon as possible despite existing constraints
A fire on Shawmut Avenue in a four story brick house ends with Edward McLear, a 40 year old unmarried lodger, found burned to death in the back attic bed. Neighbors and firefighters battled smoke and flames after a passerby noticed the blaze at 12:45 AM. McLear, a brickmason by trade, likely smoked in bed and was not awakened by shouts. The body was removed to the morgue.
Rumors say Yale and Harvard athletic authorities try to resume their popular contests. Yale has sent an invitation to Harvard to reunite in all branches of athletics and negotiations may be carried on by graduates.
The hotel explosion remains unexplained with no plausible origin given for explosives found in the chimney. Many suspect deliberate wrecking aimed at destroying the building, noting the blast could have succeeded if it had occurred.
A large Boston basement meeting of the Colored National League denounces the Republican bosses and endorses Edward Everett Brown for the school board. Speakers demand full, unreduced influence from 6000 colored voters, with threats to align with Democrats if needs are unmet.
From Havana on November 17 no news from General Weyler has arrived and the word no news is taken as bad. Weyler aimed to lead the field directly against Maceo who is known for slipping through any cordon. Observers say Weyler seeks at least a show of victory to tell the world quickly. Maceo, a hard man to corral, may breach the cordon and strike. Some claim Maceo has been preparing to greet Weyler with a strong reception when he reaches the area.
The 128th New York Chamber of Commerce banquet at Delmonico's drew 376 guests including Cabinet members and leading business figures. Alexander E. Orr honored McKinley, noting the election would shape prosperity, with remarks on Cuba and Weyler, Maceo, and a reading of President Cleveland's letter.
