Paris dispatch notes Sagasta aims to prolong negotiations to avoid signing a treaty that could end his public career and to stave off the fall of the dynasty, according to the Paris correspondent of the Daily Telegraph.
Paris reports Spain handed its reply to the American peace commission regarding the Philippines. The document will be translated and discussed tomorrow. The joint commission adjourned to Friday as Spain reiterates arbitration is needed on Article 8 wording about control and withdrawal terms.
Captain John Barneson of the transport Arizona reports Admiral Dewey saying Aguinaldo is unreliable and treacherous. Aguinaldo allegedly told his troops he will declare war on the United States once Spaniards leave and will kill American soldiers faster than the U S can ship them to the islands.
The Republican caucuses drew record turnout with several wards reporting sharp fights and recounts. Berwin and Albee won decisive delegations in wards 6, 8, 1 and 12, while Brighton backed Bigelow for council and Ward 14 and 16 saw close results. Recounts loom in multiple wards as machine support appears to prevail citywide.
Julius A. Zinn of Zinn's Flower Store at 2 Beacon Street Boston writes Warren Medicine Company praising Dr Warren's Formula B as a rapid cold cure after using it himself. He notes his store climate and open doors due to flowers and asks for a new vial, enclosing 25 cents for payment. November 15.
Medals of honor from Washington residents were presented to Colonel Harries and officers and men of the First District of Columbia Regiment who served in the Spanish American War. President McKinley attended and spoke briefly. The medals came from a Maine gun and symbolize the Fifth Army Corps division. Newport, R I. torpedo boat Dupont then demonstrated record speeds, reaching over 39 knots with two of three boilers in use during Narragansett Bay trials.
Sneak thieves prowled Division 38 last night entering multiple residences. Frank Riseman at 14 Wall street reported loss of trousers a lady's watch a plain gold ring and two suits of underwear. Jacob Apeshatzky lodger lost a gold watch. Bernard Sroetzsch at 127 Howard street had about 59 dollars in jewelry stolen and two bank books from Provident Institution for Savings. Samuel Allian at 28 Lynde street reported clothing stolen.
Captain General Blanco writes to Senator Tinado that the keenest sorrow of his life is surrendering Cuba with an army of 150 600 men and 200 guns to an enemy who claims conquest while Cuba is still to be possessed with resources.
London dispatch reports General Wesley Merritt describing Filipinos as children and arguing for a colonial government model similar to British rule. He says American attack on Manila did not require insurgent cooperation and notes Aguinaldo’s complaint about being denied a share of the spoils.
Lively contest in Ward 6 last evening as Alderman Berwin and supporters pressed for victory against Bradman and Pinkofsky factions. Vote tally not heavy but intensity high with strong showings from Berwin loyalists and their allies. Continues on Page 6.
