The fifth programme led by conductor Pierre Monteux featured a performance of The Star Spangled Banner as a tribute to the late Sibelius. The orchestra and audience stood in reverent silence, honoring the great composer and the living task he left behind.
Ferenc Vecsey, Hungarian violin prodigy, dazzled Boston with a Tschaikowsky concerto as David Smith's Poem of Youth and Sibelius Symphony No. 24 opened by Monteux. Vecsey’s virtuosity and bold phrasing drew praise for shaping themes with dramatic color while the Houston Orchestra delivered Liszt Mazeppa with fiery pomp.

Twelve United States Senators urged the Cloak Suit and Skirt Manufacturers Association to delay new working conditions set to start Monday in a bid to avert a 50 000 worker strike. Benjamin Schlesinger, ILGWU president, said only capitulation by the association could avert the strike.
