Survivors Tell Monticello Disaster Cause and Toll

Three men and four women survived the Monticello wreck as the sea pounded the steamer for hours. Stewardess Smith, badly ill, is among the survivors. Elsie McDonald is drowned and body recovered, while Lawrence’s body was seen but not reached. The three saved men blame a prolonged gale and leak that caused the vessel to founder amid mountainous seas near Halifax. other liners, including the Grecian bound for Philadelphia, also sailed back to port.

Boston steamship reaches Lewis Wharf after storm

The steamship Boston of the Yarmouth line arrived at Lewis wharf amid a gale that also wrecked the Monticello. Pilot I C Haines recalled surf so high on shore that observers could not see the vessels. Rescued crew members were thrown onto rocks and later reached Pembroke by help. Tug Gypsum King Seizes Derelict Vessels Near Chatham

At Chatham November 11 the tug Gypsum King towed two barges and the disabled schooner Robert Graham Dun after gasping Pollock Rip near dark while observed by Mercury and Juno towing the derelict schooner Myra B. Weaver. The fleet appeared bound for Boston as they headed northward.

Barges Missing After Gale Off Montauk Point

In Vineyard Haven on November a barge named Nora was floated off West Chop and anchored in the harbor. Tug Teaser returned after an unsuccessful search for two barges, the Robert Ingle Carter and the Hudson, that broke away near Montauk Point during the November 9 gale, both coal laden and bound for Boston with crews of four or five. The Carter, formerly the schooner of the same name, wrecked near Portland Harbor three months ago, was raised and converted to a barge. The Teaser will resume the search for the missing barges. The bark Ethel Clarke reported violent weather on November 8 with deck lumber shifting and some sails lost.

Louis Minyard a 20 year old hallboy at the Otel Somerset on Commonwealth avenue was kicked during a game last Friday night resulting in severe eye inflammation at the Emergency Hospital. Doctors fear loss of the left eye and may have to remove it today.

Crushed to Death in Globe Quarry Incident

Maurice Kelly son of John P. Kelly of Hopkinton was fatally crushed while guiding a stone lifted for a Boston and Albany railroad bridge at Cordaville. A dogged grip released as he crawled under the stone, breaking his spine and legs. He died within minutes after workers freed him.

Death ends divorce bid in Bucyrus scene

In Bucyrus Ohio Mrs Amos Dice filed for divorce in court. Early today her husband battered in with an axe and threatened withdrawal before firing three shots wounding her in the breast. Dice then killed himself and slit his throat. Mrs Dice is in critical condition.

Beautiful May Schaefer Arrested in Boston Crime Ring

Old in crime May Schaefer, 32, with six aliases, was arrested in Boston after knockout drops and lead knuckles were found on her. She has drifted through Philadelphia New York and Boston since 1890, facing shoplifting fines and parade-era notoriety.
