Monticello Steamer Disaster Near Yarmouth Harbor

The Monticello of the Yarmouth Steamship Company with 38 on board sank near Yarmouth Harbor after a fierce storm, six people lost, four saved. A second wreck, the schooner Myra B. Weaver, hit Vineyard Sound with victims including two girls and eight men. Shipwrecks mirror the fate of the City of Portland, with waves and boiler explosions tearing apart vessels.

Stolen Attleboro Cannon Leads to Taunton Jail

In a Pawtucket case, Fred Patterson, Jonathan H. Smith, the elder Smith’s son William, and William Hackett were arrested on wholesale stealing charges. They confessed to taking the Attleboro cannon from G A R lot in Woodlawn Cemetery last July and selling it to junk dealers in Providence. The group also admits stealing three bales of wool in Taunton, copper wire in Warren, and transporting assets to Boston. Hackett previously served time in Concord Reformatory and Rhode Island Reform School.

Jealous husband shoots wife and contractor in Lawrence

In South Lawrence at 281 Merrimack street Harry Hansford shot his wife Eliza Hansford and Frank Butler after a scuffle with Butler at the Hansford home. Butler suffered a bullet wound to the upper arm while Eliza was wounded in the shoulder blade. Both were taken to the hospital. Hansford was arrested and faces arraignment Monday.

Kidnapping Case Cleared in Fall River

Elizabeth Cummings aged 25 or 26 was arrested on November 10 for abducting 5 year old Mary Plunkett from Anawan Street. She faces assault and battery larceny and false imprisonment charges. The child was returned to her mother after a Providence search led to the arrest.

Both Legs Fractured at Navy Yard Accident

Silas 8 and Seaver 10 Main Street Charles Town injured yesterday afternoon at the navy yard when a derrick hoisting failed and fell on Seaver. He suffered fractures to both legs and was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment.

Plasterer Injured After Fall From Chapman School Scaffolding

Benanzi Caffant a plasterer fell twenty five feet from staging while working on the new Chapman school building on Eutaw street yesterday afternoon. He sustained injuries to his back and spine and was taken to his home at 42 Richmond street.

Inspectors Kelly and Douglas yesterday arrested Nellie Cook of 31 Common Street for the larceny of a gold watch from an unnamed victim.

Beer Barrel Breaks Leg At Alley’s Brewery

John Doherty of Heath Street was struck by a beer barrel at Alley’s Brewery yesterday afternoon and sustained a fracture above the knee in the right leg. City Hospital reports the injury is serious but not life threatening.

The three masted schooner Myra B. Weaver wrecked in Vineyard Sound early yesterday morning, six lives lost. Survivors rescued by the City of Macon include First Mate John Kearney and Second Mate Rasmus Olsen, with a long account of the voyage from Fernandina to Vineyard Sound.

Tragic Monticello Wreck Near Yarmouth Claims 34

Halifax reports the steamer Monticello bound from St John to Yarmouth foundered near Chegoggin Point as mountainous seas overwhelmed her. Thirty four passengers and crew perished, four survived after a perilous lifeboat escape. names include Wilson Cook Kate Smith and Captain Norman Smith.
