A blaze at the Laskey Bros factory on Chauncy Street forces a crush of about 70 women and girls trying to escape through a narrow door on the fifth floor. Goldie Lerner is seriously hurt in yesterday afternoon’s incident.
In a factory room two rows of machines operated while a boy washed hands near a rear sink. A girl lit a burning match near gas and a flash set air alight, burning Miss Lerner on the left arm as workers rushed toward the front exit. No damage occurred overall. Miss Lerner was treated at Relief Hospital.
A mysterious blaze in Brockton's Opera House block on Main near East Elm street destroyed one store and damaged four others. Loss pegged at 10 000 dollars, with investigators suspecting incendiary arson as the fire threatened to engulf the entire retail block.
A fire discovered shortly after 10 by a passer-by spread from a rear passage to the McWeeney clothing store. Mrs Genevieve Chandler Phipps widow of Lawrence Phipps Pittsburg millionaire faced a murder by dynamite plot. An unidentified woman haunted the Phipps home for two days and forced a demand of twenty thousand dollars under threat of death, police say.
A stranded robber tried to force Mrs. Phipps to withdraw $20,000 using dynamite but the blast hit only a car cushion. The suspect, claiming hypnotic influence, pursued the plan by kidnapping Mrs. Phipps’ daughter and pressing for the money. Police work to identify the woman continues as bank detectives engage her in conversation.
United States Senator Edward Ward Carmack, editor of the Tennessean, was killed in an afternoon shooting on Seventh Avenue North. Robe rt Cooper, son of Colonel Duncan Cooper, fired two shots as Carmack returned northbound. Colonel Cooper reportedly drew a pistol but did not fire.
In a fatal street incident Senator Carmack was shot and died instantly. Robin Cooper was wounded in the right shoulder but survived. The trouble stems from Carmack's editorials criticizing the Democratic machine and a recent gubernatorial primary defeat. Colonel Duncan Cooper aided Robin to a doctor. Carmack's pistol and a cigar stump were found at the scene. Robin Cooper, an attorney aged 27, and Colonel Cooper are involved with police custody.
In Nashville on November 9, Mrs. Charles H. Eastman and J. M. Eastman described the moments of a fatal street shooting. Mrs. Eastman recalled Carmack approaching, a taunting challenge from behind, and Carmack being shot as he fell into the gutter.
