50-Ton Rocking Stone on Barren Ridge
CORNISH Me Nov 7 One of the strangest freaks of nature in this section is the big rocking stone on a barren slope of a F P Chick pasture. It weighs nearly 50 tons and is so well balanced a child can move it. The roughly culiform stone measures about eight feet on a side and rests on a double bearing. Thousands of berry-pickers have visited the stone and its delicate adjustment remains unfazed.

Canal tolls and profits questioned in Stebbins testimony
Mr. Smith testified receipts total $612 915 and current operating expenses $790 649. Cross examined by Attorney Sherman I Whipple he conceded towage is the largest cost and removing it would yield about $28 000 profit. Archibald D Stebbins of Merchants and Miners said ships do not pass the canal because captains are timid and tolls not justified. Whipple pressed whether captains prefer Vineyard and Nantucket sounds or the long outside route. August Belmont, canal company president, sat in the bar enclosure during testimony.
