Early returns signal a Hughes sweep may break as reports from country districts favor Wilson. Terrible Disaster at Summer Street Extension Bridge

A south Boston car on the Summer Street Extension bridge plunges through the drawbridge into the water as passengers on the inbound car are trapped. Fifteen persons on the platform are reported saved with many killed in the car.

At 4 30 a m Wilson held 224 electoral votes to Hughes 245 with 62 in doubt. Eight states remained undecided as returns shifted, and both sides claimed or denied victory. The lead swung from Hughes toward Wilson as late results trimmed Hughes from 278 to 245.
